The department offers a program leading to a Master of Arts (MA) in Education with an emphasis in Educational Leadership in Postsecondary Education. Students who pursue the MA degree are prepared for effective management and leadership in changing multicultural societies and in varying organizational environments. Students also choose courses or concentrations in which they are personally interested.

The emphasis in Educational Leadership prepares individuals to serve in leadership roles in community colleges, universities, technical schools, governmental and adult schools as well as proprietary institutions in both national and international settings. Some of these roles will include positions such as college and technical school teachers, community college deans, and college directors.

  • Internship and field experience and college level practice teaching provided by the program;

    operations so students can continue training over
    the summer.

  • Research project in the field., gathering data with emphasis on its practical value in planning, problem-solving and decision-making;

  • Computer access on the University system and the availability of assistance on computer operations;

  • Opportunity to move into PhD or EdD program having completed MA program.

The Program/Coursework

  • Core Courses include 6-9 units in educationa lleadership in postsecondary education.

  • Concentration Courses include 6-9 units in courses which provide specialization for the individual in postsecondary levels as well as military and government agencies.

  • Research Courses involve 9 units, a course on the procedures of conducting research, and two courses on a research project in the field of educational leadership or some related area of interest.

  • The Electives, 9-12 units, are selected with the approval of a faculty advisor. This includes field experience opportunities. Students may select courses in a special area of interest or concentration, i. e., postsecondary leadership, instruction, use of technology, or student services.

Requirements for Admission

In order to gain admission to the Program, the following requirements must be fulfilled:

  • Admission to graduate status at SDSU;

  • Admission to the Postsecondary Educational
    Leadership Program;

  • Completion of an academic degree with a minimum grade point average of 2. 75.

  • Two letters of recommendation from agency where employed;

  • Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) with a combined (verbal and quantitative) score of 950.

Time Schedule

Courses are designed for students who are currently working. All of the coursework is offered in the late afternoon, evening, or on Saturdays during the regular academic year. Summer courses are offered during the day or through Distance Learning.

The Graduate Bulletin contains requirements for all academic majors, course descriptions, policies and regulations governing student progress at the University.
